Coalition Australia Now Offers up to AU$500,000 Cyber Crime Coverage Standard Limit

Limit Increase Comes As Key Findings from 2025 Cyber Claims Report Point to Social Engineering as a Top Threat

SYDNEY – 3 June 2025 Coalition, the world's first Active Insurance provider designed to help prevent digital risk before it strikes, today announced a significant enhancement to its cyber crime coverage in Australia. For eligible occupations, Coalition Australia now offers a standard limit of AU$500,000 for cyber crime, included at 25% of the overall policy limit on all Coalition cyber quotes. Higher limits, up to AU$1 million, are also available upon referral to an underwriter.

"We are focused on improving cyber resilience for all Australian organisations. By doubling our standard cyber crime limit to up to AU$500,000, we can design a policy that meets the needs of our policyholders. Our recent Claims Report showed that the average FTF loss is now over AU$250,000, which shows there was a clear gap in the market," said Trent Nihill, Head of Underwriting, Coalition Australia. "This proactive step aligns with Coalition's Active Insurance approach, which combines extensive data insights and security tools to help organisations prevent claims and minimise impact when incidents do occur."

This increase responds to critical insights from Coalition’s newly published 2025 Cyber Claims Report, which details emerging cyber trends and their impact on Coalition policyholders throughout 2024. The report found that business email compromise (BEC) and funds transfer fraud (FTF) incidents accounted for the majority (60%) of global cyber claims in 2024, with 29% of BEC events leading to FTF. The report also highlights that the average FTF loss globally was AU$290,000.

"We're pleased to see Australian claims data reflected in the global report, considering that BEC and FTF are also our most frequent incidents locally," added Stephanie Blase, Claims Counsel at Coalition Australia. "Cyber threats are global, and we believe these insights and risk mitigation strategies are valuable for organisations worldwide to understand. We're proud to contribute to keeping our policyholders, brokers, and the broader industry informed about the most critical claims trends."

Other key global insights from Coalition's 2025 Cyber Claims Report include:

  • As claims frequency decreased by 7% YoY, claims severity remained stable.

  • Ransomware claims stabilised in 2024 (frequency decreased by 3% and severity by 7%) despite remaining the most costly and disruptive type of cyberattack.

  • BEC claims severity increased by 23%.

  • FTF claims frequency decreased by 2% and severity decreased by 46% YoY. The sharp decline in severity follows an all-time high in 2023.

  • When deemed reasonable and necessary, 44% of policyholders that experienced a ransomware incident opted to pay the ransom. Coalition Incident Response (CIR) was able to negotiate ransom payments down by an average of 60%.

  • Coalition policyholders experienced 73% fewer claims than the industry average, according to NAIC data.

The report draws insights from data collected from Coalition policyholders across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Download the full 2025 Cyber Claims Report from Coalition to learn more.
