Why I Joined: Integrating Security Solutions with Active Insurance

Coalition Blog: John Koehnecke

Earlier in my career, I led an overlay sales and sales engineering team at a large telecommunications provider, focusing on advanced technology solutions.

During that time, I noticed that customer engagement and profitability in security solutions were winning over more traditional enterprise networking products and services. Focused cybersecurity sales started calling me.

I knew that I wanted to go where the momentum was. I still do, which has ultimately led me to Coalition.

The journey so far

I’ve spent a significant part of my career in the managed detection and response (MDR) market. Truthfully, I would have never anticipated that would lead me to an insurance company.

But life is unpredictable. When my wife and kids brought home a couple of rabbits, I didn’t know we could train them to roam the house freely like small dogs.

The bright side: The rabbits don’t bark when the doorbell rings.

The even brighter side: I’ve seen first-hand that integration between insurance and security solutions is a game-changer to combat risk.

And I’m excited to help spearhead that journey here.

Security solutions: A piece of the Active Insurance puzzle

Cyber insurance is an integral part of a customer’s cyber resilience strategy, but it was clear to me that, at Coalition, it’s more than just a traditional transfer of risk.

Due to the constantly evolving threat landscape, the old approach to insurance doesn’t cut it. Instead, Active Insurance is an ongoing partnership throughout the entire policy term. That means active risk monitoring and alerting policyholders to limit their exposure, a readily accessible panel of experts to be there if the worst-case scenario happens, and access to our risk management platform, Coalition Control, to catch things before they become a worst-case scenario.

We are uniquely able to strengthen our security offerings by leveraging a data-driven understanding of cybersecurity risks and trends.

A future fueled by collaboration

In my last role in the MDR market, I had very little overlap with cyber insurers. Coincidentally, I learned that Coalition won a new account I was pursuing just a few weeks prior to joining.

The message was clear to me: Coalition is uniquely positioned to align with clients in a way that traditional MDR providers cannot.

Through our proactive risk assessment and underwriting capabilities, we have a unique product that is designed to protect the unprotected in ways that other traditional insurers cannot, providing our customers with crucial data to help them make informed decisions surrounding risk. We also have Coalition Incident Response (CIR)* to quickly respond in the event that an incident occurs. This all helps our policyholders minimize their losses and maximize their security throughout their entire policy period.

This kind of access is a huge draw for managed service providers (MSPs) and security solution integrators (SSIs), and it’s definitely a differentiating factor compared to typical MDR offerings. When we work collaboratively, everyone — businesses, MSPs/SSIs, and Coalition — wins together.

Collaboration will continue to be a central theme for me in the coming year. Working hands-on with customers to help them solve complex and difficult problems is one of my favorite parts of the job. Another bonus? Nurturing and developing relationships with professionals in the cybersecurity space — and bringing a few of them into the fold here.

If you’re interested in being part of our mission to protect the unprotected, take a look at our open roles.
